| The local arts and crafts of Olinalá ("El
Maqueo") of the XVII and XVIII centuries, is certainly characterized and derived from a Chinese influence in the decoration of the porcelain brought by the Nao of the Phillipines to the western coast of Mexico. The motifs were made in Chinese red or bright vermilion with an overlapping of layers and decorations. Figures like the tree of the life were used with two facing birds, fantastic foliages with birds overhead, flowers and stylized fruits, all with an unmistakable Asian flavor that transformed gradually adapting to the traditional Indian style. |

| Francisco "Chico" Coronel was born on June 4, 1941 in Olinalá, Guerrero. He learned his occupation from his father, José Colonel Rodríguez and for 30 years as an artisan, made colored chests and it participated in the circuit of popular fairs that take place in the states of Guerrero and Morelos which constituted the most important regional market for Olinalá, among them the biggest was the Tepalcingo Fair on th Fourth Friday of Lent. "Chico" was discovered by Carlos Espejel who was the director of the National Museum of Arts and Popular Industries and who motivated him to begin new innovations in the study of the the old lacquer arts. |
|
| Also, this began his incursion into the technique of the Gilding (painted with an aditional application of of gold-leaf and silver-leaf). Today Francisco Coronel is the only master artisan from Olinalá that has mastered this technique. His works are known and appreciated worldwide. His work has been showcased in workshops and shows sponsored by the Bancomer Cultural Foundation . He has received more than 20 awards and recognitions, among these is the National Prize for Popular Art in 1978 and Grand Prize from Fonarte in 1995.. |
